ARCHIVES - BLOCK OF THE MONTH
BOM - FEBRUARY 2003
Squares
This block came from a quilt design by Jan Mullen. It intrigued me because I thought it would make a great scrap quilt that would be quick and easy to assemble for a donation baby quilt. It would also look great with coordinated fabrics such as blues and whites or all bright fabrics.
All blocks are 6 inches finished. However there are three different size centers which give the quilt a fun, haphazard look.  Cutting does not need to be accurate until the final squaring-up process. The center square should not be a perfect square. You can cut a bit bigger and a bit crooked when you see the ish measurement. To make a 36" by 40" quilt you will need 42 squares; 14 small-center blocks, 14 medium-center blocks and 14 large-center blocks. Join the blocks side by side With 7 rows of 6 blocks
Cutting a Small Center Block:
1.  Cut a 3" ish center square.
2.  Cut two, 3" ish side pieces from background fabric.
3.  Cut two 3" x 7" ish edge rectangles from background fabric.

Cutting a Medium Center Block:
1.  Cut a 4” ish center square.
2.  Cut two 2 ½”ish side pieces from background fabric
3.  Cut two 2 1/2" x 7" ish edge rectangles from background fabric.

Cutting a Large Center Block:
1.  Cut a 5"ish center square.
2.  Cut two 2”x 5” ish side pieces from background fabric
3.  Cut two 2" x 7 1/2" ish edge rectangles from background fabric

Piecing a Block:
1.  Trim the center square to the shape you like. Crooked is good.
2.  Stitch the two side pieces to opposite sides of the center square
3.  Trim to straighten the edges.  Tapering is good!
4.  Stitch on the edge rectangles.
5.  Trim to a 6 1/2" square.
